In late 2014, Netflix released Marco Polo, a new series that would be based off of The Travels of Marco Polo. While a dramatization, the show also provides key insights into a critical period of Chinese history, mainly the founding of the Yuan dynasty by Kublai Khan and the final days of the Southern Song dynasty that had managed to resist the Mongol empire since the days of Genghis.
Featuring a cast as diverse as the Mongol empire itself, Marco Polo serves as an eye opener to a time where a Mongol controlled Asia, and the founding of the Yuan empire in China, led to many scientific, cultural and social developments.
