About Jia Sidao
Thought to have been born in 1213, Jia Sidao served as chancellor for the Southern Song dynasty under the emperor Lizong, and later under the emperor Duzong. While the Netflix series portrays this accurately, they veer off the accuracy when it comes to his competency as a political leader and also in his own personal martial arts skills. The Jia SIdao in the series is a cold blooded, emotionless, Machiavellian, and ruthless politician who succeeds in getting things to go his way. Not only that, but he is also portrayed as a great warrior and expert in the martial arts. According to historical sources this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, his downfall did not come at the hands of a Yuan military victory but instead from his own attempts at land reforms and economic reforms which made him not only unpopular with Song subjects, but also the imperial court. The final nail in his coffin was his military defeat at the Battle of Yihu which saw the imperial capital fall to the armies of Kublai Khan. This would led to his eventual assassination or execution.
One thing Netflix did get right was his love for cricket fighting and him being referred as 'the cricket minister' behind his back.
